"Did you ever wish that Harry Potter was real? Well it kind of is. After all, both our worlds face "dark and difficult times"". So states the Harry Potter Alliance webpage.

Through chapters, Facebook and MySpace, the HPA is organizing members united by the common belief that Harry Potter is a metaphor for our world.

This is another great example of how a common experience or interest can be meaningful enough to inspire additional group actions. This perhaps isn't so different from the shared experiences of having lived in a certain country, experienced a certain illness, etc.
